Overall Evaluation

This was my first project to start of my new year. I had to try to one up myself from what was my final project from last year that gained me a distinction grade. I mainly wanted to create a better video then the last one and with this project I definitely used some new elements which I never used last time. I still this time round wanted to create a deeper story within the story (sounds confusing). This time it was that the world the character was in wasn't real... let me explain. The video itself started off in the style of an old golden era of cinema movie. The year was 1935 and the character was showing people how to set up a camera and a tripod. This went on as normal until there was about one minute left of the video and it started to go distorted. This was the world that was created around this character falling apart. After it goes like that for a while the screen begins to change and the screen goes from black and white to full colour. Then the camera cuts too black. This is what I mean by there being a story within the story. I like to do these within my project because they always add more depth into the story and makes them overall more interesting. I'm glad I chose to record when I did because I then had more time to add in small details and it gave more time to write about everything. I luckily had no trouble at all editing which I remember last time was a big hassle. The editing phase of this video was by far the easiest area, that was because it only took me around 3 hours to edit isn't that long but it also meant it took me 1 hour per minute of video which can seem like a long time. Overall this project flowed really well and was really easy to get through and I got to put my editing to show.

Extra Information about the final video

  • The black and white effect was easy enough to create it took around 30 seconds because all I had to do was drop the saturation of the video, the vintage look to the film was the challenge. The way I had done it was to first make the black box look more dull and the way I done that was to add a blur to the corners. That made the corners less sharp and made it feel more old and 'lost'. I next would add an adjustment layer on top of everything and drop the saturation on that to, I would also add noise onto it which adds the grain to all the videos. for additional use I would add a overlay of vintage screen pops to add more on the effect of it being old.
  • In the beginning of the video in the bottom corner is a picture of an elephant, that is a cigarette brand called Le Nil. This German cigarette brand was created in the year 1935 meaning it would have been in the same time period that this video was set in. Cigarette companies used to produce these films back then so I thought I would add this company to 'produce' this short film. Most of these short films back then were usually produced to promote smoking to people and usually to a younger population which now in modern times we know that smoking is not good for you and should not be advertised. (there's a sad fact)
  • In the final minute of the video the screen starts to corrupt and become more like real life which is where the real end of the video is. This was when the beginning of the sixth step comes in but there was only actually 5 steps to the tutorial. This final minute is creepy and makes the viewer feel uncomfortable which is designed to happen (I know this because everyone I've shown has had the exact same reaction to this part) It originally wasn't intended to be like this because I had a different vision in mind for the ending but whilst I was editing I became really creeped out/ on edge by the beginning of this area that I decided I wanted to make it a creepy as possible. During this section which I will call the 'corruption' loads of different sound can be heard. These sound are the following: the music slowed down, the music sped up, the music reserved, the music reversed and sped up. A screaming sound effect slowed down, me and a classmate having a conversation reversed and there was me laughing which I slowed down and put in reverse. These sounds where all stacked on top of each other which would create the sound that you hear in the video
